At Castle Hill Primary School our aim is that the curriculum is fun, engaging and allows pupils to enjoy their learning. We want all our pupils to reach their full potential in all areas of their learning;
Our curriculum has been reviewed in line with the new National curriculum introduced in September 2014. It is currently organised into discrete subject areas, for example, maths, English, history and art etc; each subject area has its own subject leader who is responsible for managing that subject. All leaders have investigated valuable websites links and resources that you and your child can access at home as an extra resource and support. These resources can be found under the various year group pages.
In order to develop purposeful and real life opportunities for our pupils many of our foundation subjects and topics have cross curricular links with English and maths. We have tried during the curriculum review to create exciting learning opportunities for developing children’s subject specific skills and knowledge and also important opportunities for helping children recognise links between curriculum subjects. This helps our children;
Data handling skills learned in maths, for example, can be purposely applied in geography and science; experiencing and describing processes in geography and science offer children relevant experiences and enhanced understanding when learning how to write explanations in English. Art, music and film can all enhance learning experiences within English. The aim is to support our pupils to see the relevance, within a wider context, of the skills and knowledge they are acquiring in specific subjects.
Year groups produce a half termly overview of the key themes and links they will be covering and this is available on the year group pages.
For Key Stage 1 reading is taught using a variety of reading schemes, including phonic based schemes such as Project X to give access to a wide range of vocabulary. Phonics is taught using the Read, Write Inc scheme through whole class teaching, differentiated groups and small group and 1:1 support where necessary.
